Welcome to the Water-wise Garden Tour
The Water-wise Garden Tour is
a self guided tour. Information is available in three different
forms; printed brochure, Smartphone enabled Bluetooth access or
Smartphone scan 2D barcodes on signs to link to Web pages.

The
Water-wise Garden Tour is designed to help you explore the seven
principles of Water-wise landscaping. This tour will give you the
basic information you need to understand how simple changes can make
your landscape more beautiful, reduce your maintenance and reduce
your carbon footprint.
Communities in North Texas are faced with increased
demands on existing water supplies. Consequently, there is a greater
focus on water conservation, not just in times of drought, but in
anticipation of future population growth. Water can no longer be
considered a limitless resource. Water-wise landscaping is a
philosophy of conservation of water through creative landscaping
with native and adaptive trees,
shrubs and plants.
Water-wise, xeriscape and sustainable landscapes all
have the same common goal of water, energy and resource
conservation. The term xeriscape is derived from the Greek word
xeros meaning dry, combined with landscaping, thus xeriscaping. The
term was coined by the Front Range Xeriscape Task Force of the
Denver Water Department in 1981.
The goal of a
water-wise landscape is to create a visually attractive landscape
that uses plants selected for their water efficiency. Properly
maintained, a water-wise landscape can easily use less than one-half
the water of a traditional landscape. Once established, a water-wise
landscape should require less maintenance than turf landscape.
