Efficient Use of
Water

Almost everyone
waters their lawn and plants too much. Efficient use of water means
giving your plants, tree and shrubs adequate water without any
waste. Landscape irrigation should only be used to supplement
rainfall when necessary to promote plant health and vigor.
Water rates in North
Texas have been increasing about 20% per year for the last 5 years. If water
conservation is your goal, then you may want to rethink your
watering policy.
The key to watering
landscapes and lawns is applying water infrequently and thoroughly.
The best time to water plants and turf is when it is needed. Learn
to recognize the signals of a thirsty landscape - shrubs will begin
to droop and grass will lie flat and leave footprint impressions.
Irrigation should be scheduled during the coolest, calmest part of
the day to avoid loss through evaporation and wind drift.
Have a water audit
performed by a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor. Over time all
irrigation systems begin to break down. An irrigation audit consists
of three main activities: Site Inspection, Performance Testing and
Irrigation Scheduling. The Auditor will then recommend how to make your irrigation system more efficient
and correct any problems that may exist. More information is
available on our web site under the Resources area.
